As I'm sure has been mentioned buses are safe but time consuming, boring and uncomfortable. The distances travelled are sometimes quite extensive and other times you make multiple stops in small cities. In between major cities there are often express buses which do not make all the small town stops. There are other bus lines also, including Trailways and Coach USA as well as several regional bus services.
The bus terminals in major cities are usually in older downtown areas and not always safe. In many upper east coast cities, however, they have easy access to subways or other methods to get around the cities. In the southern states there are usually only city bus lines with stops next to the terminals. There are a few Subways and train systems in large Midwest and west coast cities.

I suggest you avoid Greyhound as Greyhound isn't as used
be, you will find your self on very crowded buses,
where either you take the bus you will have to stand on the bus
or be stranded or even lied to
the first bus will come though full, and then be told
oh a second section is on the way the 2nd section may or may not come (one time a second bus did come but it wasn't
operated by greyhound but another company whose driver
didn't speak English!
and lots of times Greyhound uses contractors bus company
whose drivers dont speak a word of English!
plus there have many reports of Greyhound buses
catching fire (lots of time the passengers didn't make it), or even running of fuel?
then greyhound bus station are in the worst part of most towns
and then we got meal stops -where you can pay up
to $10.00 for a hot dog! and lots of times the driver
doesnt even allow you to eat on the bus after a meal stop
or even let you bring food on the bus
there also have been several reports of the buses
restroom overflowing -having sewage running down the aislee
so if yreyhound
make sure your WILL IN ORDER AS you may come back
in a box
as an alternete I suggest Amtrak
you will be more comfy and you can move arround more
on the train.
(and their restoom dont overflow either)

It is pretty easy. My brother took a Greyhound from California to Florida once.....it took a couple of days. It wasn't too expensive. I think it would be just as safe as any other form of travel. It is the bus stops themselves that would worry me. Some are in decent areas but most are in not so great areas. Have you considered taking the trains, it is a little more expensive than the buses but far less than airfare and it is faster too. I personally would prefer to go by train or by plane.....sitting on a bus for too long would make me go crazy.

According to http://www.theskilledtraveler.com Greyhound is an economical way to go, and it does give you access to all of the lower 48 states. It lacks security, and some of the stations it drops you off, are far from the word safe. It also lacks comfort and is prone to being late in major metro areas. Amtrak is a good alternative, a little pricier, and fewer final destinations, but it will more comfortable, reliable, and safer.

from city to city , it's not to bad, but they've cut out a whole lot of small town stops , So, if your destination is small town USA, you'll have to figure out how to get there , from the bus station. And Taxi's aren't that plentiful either.
