DEFINITELY read them in order, or you're going to be wayyyy lost.
1. Harry Potter and the Sorcer's Stone
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
6. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
And when in doubt, the spine of the book should say what "year" the book takes place. For instance, the first book will say "Year 1", the second "Year 2" and so on.

Well, with any series you should read them in order. Nevertheless, I didn't read the HP books in order. Sometimes I got confused because there were things covered in previous books and I didn't know what J.K. Rowling was talking about, but it shouldn't be a major problem. I would strongly suggest reading books 5, 6, and 7, in the right order, as that is when the books really seem to be connected to each other.

Definitely read Harry Potter! There are so many levels to the characters that the films don't even touch. The first two books are the weakest in the series in my (and my girlfriends - yes we're all in our 30s - and we all adore Harry!) opinion. In the third one, you really learn about Harry's parents - something that's not even hinted at in the movies. *editing in - I agree with the poster before me - the way time travel is portrayed is absolutely superb.* Then the fourth through the last - they're all amazing. Trust me, they are so much better than Twilight. There are twists and turns you'll never see coming. Plus they're often laugh out loud funny. Give them a shot, you won't regret it.

Yes absolutely read them in order. They don't make sense otherwise--they build off of each other.
1--HP and the Sorcerer's Stone (in England--Philosopher's Stone)
2--HP and the Chamber of Secrets
3--HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4--HP and the Goblet of Fire
5--HP and the Order of the Phoenix
6--HP and the Half Blood Prince
7--HP and the Deadly Hallows
Enjoy--they are great!
