sexism, racism (the "N" bomb) are the two main ones and another one is drug abuse. Though these issues also start to eat away at our freedom of speech, if the government and companies start to police what we say. The deeper social issues are what should be addressed not the words themselves.

They 'rule' over the Philippines in the sense that America is a worldwide center of cultural authority. Many facets of modern Filipino lifestyle and culture are modelled off of America from areas such as music and television to high school and college life. However the Philippines is still able to maintain it's unique culture while being influenced from other countries. As far as economically, you could say that the US rules the world for reasons which do not need to be further elaborated upon. However, in today's society, I believe the majority of power does not lie in the hands of nation states, but in transnational corporations such as General Motors or Microsoft. The only things Governments can do is implement measures aimed at controlling investment, spending, savings and foreign competition. However the effectiveness of such measures are reliant upon the decisions and motivations of transnational corporations. Politically, I can't say either way. The only obvious thing to note here is that the US has alot of sway in world affairs due to their status as a superpower. This naturally applies to the Philippines as well. Furthermore, America gains more leverage to use against the Philippines every time it provides assistance and aid to the nation. However I personally believe America could have a lot of sway in Philippine domestic affairs, its just that the US hardly ever uses it's influence simply because there is nothing of interest to the Americans in the Philippines. This however does not necessarily reflect badly on the Philippines, but only goes to show you how powerful America is on a world wide scale. However their status will decrease in the years ahead as China will continue to gain ground and maybe even surpass the Americans in the distant future. Furthermore unlike what wrestler has stated above, a nation does not need a military presence in a country to have influence over it. In fact wrestler seemed to disregard the 'invisible hands' as stated in the question. A military presence is only required if a nation provides resistance to foreign influence or to prevent resistance/conflict in the future (e.g Vietnam through the 60's and 70's). And we all know how much the Philippines loves anything American right? In such cases America can still maintain its influence over a nation by maintaining good relations and its public image as a superpower (e.g Japan and Korea after it was rebuilt by America following WW2 and the Korean war respectively). As Is highlighted in these cases, Japan and Korea have since been very obedient towards the Americans because of their gratitude in rebuilding their countries. This is better known as waging a 'winning hearts and minds' campaign. However unlike the cases listed above, America did not even have to rebuild the Philippines in order to gain the Philippine people's dependance, respect and obedience, which is a shame.
