I'm pretty sure people who ask if Vermont is a state are both ignorant and stupid. I think this speaks volumes as to the quality of education being provided to our youth. *sigh*
I'm assuming you live in Vermont or are from there? Otherwise why would you have so many opportunities to educate the masses on the state of Vermont? Pun intended.
Keep on keepin' on buddy. I know its a state. Apparently a few other people on here do too. Also I love syrup, and fall leaves, and your trooper's outfits. I give Vermont 2 thumbs up.

Wow - I never heard of people (in the US at least) not knowing that Vermont was a state! When I first read your question, I thought you were from another country, or complaining about people from other countries not knowing about Vermont (which wouldn't be too surprising).
To make you feel better (or worse, not really sure!), I heard a story on NPR about a month ago about how people in the US think New Mexico is part of Mexico - to the point where people flying in to New Mexico (from another US state) have been asked for a passport!
I agree, though, that it is pathetic that US citizens don't know all the states in their own country!

That tells you the level of intellectual curiosity in the US right now. TVs are doing as much as they can to dumb down America through their Lowest Comedy Denominator programs. The first thing the schools should do to kids at school is to have them memorize all the US States---give them a blank map and have them write the appropriate state names on it.
Yes, Vermont is a state with its own governor. It borders Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York---and I mean New York State, not New York City. It is not part of another state---if it was, it would be called a county or a city, and it wouldn't be listed as one of the states with the abbreviation VT on the United States Postal Services. It is an American state and has nothing to do with Canada whatsoever. Currently, it uses "Green Mountain State" as its slogan on automobile license plates.
There are 50 states in the US mainland and all of these states can be reached by road. I am not going to name them because you can just look at a US map. They can be freely attained on the internet.
Alaska and Hawaii are also US states, but are not part of the US mainland.
Washington DC (District of Columbia) is a city-state and is not part of any states, also otherwise known as a district. It was created to build the US capital city and is named after Christopher Columbus.
American Samoa, Baker Island, Guam, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Northern Mariana Islands, Palmyra Atoll, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Wake Island are US Oversea Territories.
From 18 July 1947 until 1 October 1994, the US administered the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands; it entered into a political relationship with all four political units: the Northern Mariana Islands is a commonwealth in political union with the US (effective 3 November 1986); the Republic of the Marshall Islands signed a Compact of Free Association with the US (effective 21 October 1986); the Federated States of Micronesia signed a Compact of Free Association with the US (effective 3 November 1986); Palau concluded a Compact of Free Association with the US (effective 1 October 1994).

I think it might be because Vermont wasn't one of the 13 colonies, but it seems like it should have been.

They aren't stupid, they are ignorant. Googling for the answer would be a better idea.
As my Daddy always said; "Better to stand there and look stupid than to open your mouth and prove it!
Hope that helps!

This is a perfectly valid question - from a 5 year old!
If the person is beyond 3rd grade, it is called "uneducated".
