An adaptive coping mechanism is one that accomodates changes in the environment. For example, if you live on a diet of apples, and apples are no longer available, it would be adaptive to begin eating pears. A maladaptive coping mechanism is one that runs counter to changes in the environment, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. In human society, it might be considered maladaptive to speak out against government corruption or to protest against discrimination. However, it would also be considered maladaptive, in my first example, so simply stop eating anything because apples are no longer available; this would lead inexorably to death.
