My car has a bunch of break dust built up on the rims and I can't get it off with conventional soap and water. It's only a problem visually, but I would like the rims to be clean. They are aluminum alloy. I don't want to use a chemical that will damage the rim. Just wondering if anyone had success with a specific cleaning agent any help is appreciated.

For the past several years our shop has used Gold Glass All Wheel cleaner by Meguiars. It runs about $6.00 a bottle at any parts store. It's completely safe on the aluminum and cuts through baked on brake dust very well.

For the most part any aluminum compatible wheel cleaner is going to do the trick. Most parts stores carry 10-12 brands of wheel cleaning products. You can find a cheaper alternative to the Meguiar product but you'll probably spend a bit more time scrubbing.

If you really want to make the wheels "pop" invest in some Meguiars Mag and Aluminum Polish. You'll be astounded at the difference it makes in the overall shine. This product is only to be applied to a perfectly cleaned wheel! It runs about $8.00 a tin. It can be applied with good old fashion elbow grease or a buff ball for faster results.

Hope this helps!

If they are the correct size for your Blazer, I'd go with the aluminum rims, especially at only $100 bucks. They are lighter, which will help with handling and will definitely be better looking. I would not be too concerned with potholes or damaging them from curbs as with an SUV you will most probably have a higher profile tire (probably a 65-70 series sidewall) which puts more rubber between your rim and the road. One more thing, aluminum rims CAN crack and damage easily, so before handing over your cash, I'd check the outside surfaces as well as the INSIDE surfaces for any damage.

Robert, I've had the vrey best luck with, Eagle One All Wheel and Tire Cleaner. When using this product make absolutely sure tires wheels and tires are as cold as possible. You may need a small sponge backed White Scotch Bright Scrubbing household pad to help to do a perfect job.
As you probably already know your car has OEM metallic or semi-metallic brake pads. When it's time to replace them try a set of organic based pads such as EBC Green Stuff. All Toyota cars have organic pads as OEM equipment. You'll never see a Toyota with the usual red / grey / brown filthy rotor and brake dust in their aluminum wheels. Hawk makes a clean pad also. Search on autopaerswarehouse.com partstrain.com tirerack.com and partstrain.com for an improved cleaner brake pad.
The beauty of an organic pad is they will never danage your brake rotors. Semi-metallics and full metallics score, chew and grind the best brake rotors in the world to death!
