You have asked a very provocative question, and one to which I don't think I know a definitive answer. I suspect words became "bad words" depending upon the connotation in which they were used. Some words, like f>ck weren't bad words at all when they first came into use, but over the centuries it has come to mean something much different. Some are "curse" words, using the Lord's Name....guess those wouldn't be bad words to atheists but they sure use them a lot =).. What makes other words bad, like the slang for fecal material, I don't know. People say "crap" with impunity, never thinking that they are saying a euphemism for that other slang word. Kids now are using "freakin" in front of parents, teachers, everyone, but no one seems to know or care that it just substitutes for that other "F" word that no one wants kids to say. Like I said....a very provocative question. Here's your star. And I will check back to see what other answers you get...I would like to know.

The short answer: not person... people.

Good, Bad... no one person decides these things.

"Good" and "bad" are ideas that are established by our own cultures. More accurately, they are expectations of what other people will do and what the physical world will be like. Good and bad are simply terms assigned to these ideas.

At some time, your parent(s) acquired the idea that certain words and/or terms were bad or good. In response to this, they reacted by exposing you to those things which they understand as either bad or good.

The same thing goes for all people who are the caretakers of other people.

In America, special bureaus established by the government act as the "parent" who decides what is "good" or "bad." Most parents just agree with the standards set by the government without actually deciding for themselves. It's easier this way.

look on the question this way: Are you a foul guy or woman for publicly admitting which you do not carry a private concept in a god? No! you're being a guy or woman of integrity. Now, while you're uncertain what you fairly have confidence anymore, calling your self an agnostic is extra impartial and there is not something incorrect approximately admitting you do not probably have a clue with regards to the priority. Now, while you're heavily involved in the priority, there are quite a few great books written with regards to the question of God and spirituality. i'm the form of guy or woman who has consistently stored an open strategies on the priority. I certainly have a solid own concept in God, yet i'm nevertheless very careful of people who declare to be responsive to the want of God (God is the great secret of all life, how ought to absolutely everyone be lifeless specific on what God's intentions are?).

There wasn't a particular person, just society as a whole, that decided that the old Anglo-Saxon words were "bad," while the new French/Latin-based words for the EXACT SAME THING were "good." This happened around the 1600s or earlier.

Thus we have
"bad" "good"
(the f word) fornicate
(the s word) feces
(the c/d word) penis
...and even
chew masticate
kiss osculate
etc.

Sorry, if you are going to be part of society and not live as a hermit, you need to follow the rules that govern acceptable behavior - no matter how silly they may seem.

Good luck!

"Bad" words have changed over the years and are also different in different languages but they all mean one thing.
"Disrespect".
Long ago when kids would get hit with a leather strap (or worse) for disrespecting their parents, teachers or any elder, it was determined that that certain words, used improperly, showed that disrespect.
They may vary as far as different cultures are concerned but for modern day parents the punishment seems to be to take away your video game.
Kinda sad really.

My Mom. She hates is when I swear so I just don't do it around her. I don't do it around my Dad b/c I'd give him a heart attack.
I'm legally a aldult to.
I also don't swear around the elderly or children for I don't want parents kids calling me to yell at me. Also a lot of those bad words are used at insults so that doesn't help much.

The people who thought them up (and the people who grew to like them) KNEW they were bad, and was quite happy to utter them - whether it was for shock effect or because it gave him/her some sense of self-satisfaction or tension-release. And though many of them have lost much of their shock effect, due to over-use, children still like to try to offend their elders or engage in what they think is some "inner secret" practice. Swearing is very often (not always, I admit) a sign of low-class or lack-of-education, but it obviously still appeals to young people. I admire your parents for at elst trying to teach you some sort of self-discipline.

It's ridiculous that people have determined certain words are "taboo". Words are not offensive, it is the attention behind them that is offensive.

So swear as much as you want. If someone is stupid enough to be offended then they deserve to be.

it all depends on the person. words can be "bad" if you portray them that way. but it all comes down to ignorance. words are just words, anyone who lets a simple word bother them is ridiculous.

Case in point, first one ok, second Yahoo prints as asterisks, some words will just get you returned to the last page without comment.

Same meaning!

Two thumbs down for a simple example.
Somebody's got a burr under the blanket.
