I don't like unisex names, especially for boys. I would use it as a middle name and pick a more traditional masculine name for the first name
Jake Dakota
Zane Dakota

While there are many boys named Dakota, there are also several famous "girl Dakota"s, which could create a problem later in his life (i.e. Dakota Fanning)

It is cute but be aware it is a very popular name, there are three boys in my daughters grade named Dakota and I think a girl too.

Dakota has been used as a girl's name before so I would not use it.
The name also doesn't feel as masculine. If you like place names, how about Phoenix? Phoenix is a handsome name and it's strong and masculine.

My friend has a son named Dakota, and though it's getting very popular, it's still a good name.
By the way 'monkq2'... he's never ever been made fun of because of his name.

It sounds trendy and awful. Also, there's a girl actress named Dakota, so that might be hard for your son.
