It seems the old one is not properly fit. Why don't you re-open then remove both MB Ram. Please shut down pc before hand. Again fix Ram 256 you will notice a sound when it will properly fixed. Then go to Ram 512 and fix it and you must confirm if it is also properly fixed.
Re-start computer and chek.
There isn't any hard part to add new MB Ram, but you should know how much extra MB Ram can be added in your computer.
If you are using new computer then there shouldn't be problem.
If need any further help please give your computer model and maker also. nihon94@yahoo.com

first goto :crucial.com run the scanner.
make sure the ram is compatible with your p.c.
also when installing ram make sure the stick is properly seated.
sometimes ram works in pairs ie:512+512 or 256+256

A computer can only register ram modules of the same spec, memory, clock phase etc. never two alternates, my suggestion, flog the 256 on ebay, if you're running xp 512 is sufficient unless you're doing some gaming.

Have you exceeded the maximum RAM for your PC? With 256 before, I suspect you max out at 512.

if your dealing with a laptop the 256 you originally had was most likely fake ram, what i mean is it was taking your virtual ram and using it. now that you actually have physical ram in there it is just using the physical ram
