Yes, it can be controlled! What you need is a waterproof barrier coating that will seal out moisture preventing mildew and mold. I suggest 1 Part Epoxy by Top Secret Coatings, which is available in 220 colors plus clear and available on Top Secret's online store. It is a barrier coating that is fully waterproof (vs water resistant) that is easy to apply, non-toxic and long lasting. You will want to begin by killing the mold and mildew by cleaning with a bleach and water solution. Once throughly dry simply brush roll or spray it on according to label diections. Its high flexiblity allows it to move with the wood as it expands and contracts with the ambient moisture eliminating the possibility of cracking and peeling making it preferable to shellac, varnish or urethane. Good luck on this.

Mold requires moisture to grow. Find the source of your leak and repair it then try cleaning walls with a 50/50% bleach water mixture. If the framing structure behind the finished walls is involved the drywall and/or paneling will have to be removed to clean studs and plates.
I'd suggest you have the roof and plumbing checked for leaks.

Mold can only grow if the moisture in the air (humidity) is>50%. For answers about that and other indoor air quality problems go to www.hvac-for-beginners.com

Something in your home is leaking. It can be controlled, but by the time you see what you describe, you just about have to get professional help. Get a house inspector to find out what's wrong and give you some recommendations.

Good luck!

Eradicated, no. Controlled, PROBABLY. I would call the contractor that built the house - it's THEIR responsibility!
