Anything by Chris Crutcher. The books are short and classified as YA, but very meaty.
Looking for Alaska by John Green
Loitering with Intent Muriel Sparks
Once you're ready for something a little more intense, then you really should try American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart
John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men
Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita
They won't be too feel-good, for sure, but all are well written and about 200 pages each (Lolita might be 300).

"The Great Gatsby" - a classic short piece of fiction. And it certainly isn't "feel good"
If you are looking for something a little more contemporary, you might try something by Kerouac, such as "On the Road" or "Dharma Bums."

"The Awakening" by Kate Chopin.
"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Both are under 200 pages and well-worth reading.

I recommend Of Mice And Men. It's a tragic book, but it is very good. It is short. I usually read it in one night. (I've read it many times.)

I think you might enjoy 'The Bell Jar,' by Sylvia Plath, or JD Salinger's 'Catcher in the Rye.'
