Otherwise, you skew everything you read to your already existing viewpoints and don't really learn anything new, thus defeating the purpose of reading.

If you are reading to take in information, you retain more of the info if you keep an open mind.
If you are reading to advance or update the knowledge you already have. Opening your mind gives the new info the chance to over ride the old info.

You could miss out on key points if you don't. You also lose out on the opportunity to grow. An open mind doesn't mean not thinking but it means being more critical, asking more questions, being careful not to assume things, etc.
