hey does anyone know what the various characteristics of world war II that make it a total war are? it would be helpful if you could give me characteristics of wwII that do not make it a total war as well (:

Indiscriminate carpet bombing/incendiary attacks of civilians, economic infrastructure, points of cultural interest, and cities....and let's not forget the nuclear attacks....all define what's total war in the modern era.

What was total about it was almost every country in the world was with the allies or the axis powers. Not just armies fought but cities were bombed. Merchant shipping was also a target. The u boats sank many ships and killed many merchant seamen. The only restrictions was a ban on gas and germ warefare but I think the Japanese may have broke that ban in China.

The economies of the countries involved were totally devoted to war with all essential products being rationed.
Civilian populations were targetted where this would help the war effort.

Total war literally means that the countries involved mobilize all their resources economics, people, military etc. to destroy the enemies' ability to fight. That includes not only the enemies' military, but it includes infrastructure, resources, civilians not excluded, morale, etc.
