Actually, he DID "live the American dream." As it has become distorted over the past seven years of criminals running the show.
"Lie, steal, cheat, lie some more to cover yourself, and lie some more while stuffing some more money in your pockets."
Yup.

In America, where our forefathers fought to gain all the freedoms we now have - to be an individual, to speak our minds, to worship as we wish, etc. - he is entitled to think what he wants, just as all those who believe adhering to principles is more important than fame & money can use that as a measurement of the American Dream.
Personally, I fall somewhere inbetween the polar opposites expressed in most of the answers. I want to maintain my moral standards, honesty & integrity while gaining a certain amount of fame & enough money to feel secure.
What I feel is obscene is the amount of money some people are paid for their jobs (politicians, CEOs, sports & movie stars, etc.) while those who do the brunt of the work of caring for our children (the future) & our elderly (the past) get the lowest amount of pay & benefits.
Now there's a subject that needs a lot of attention to be resolved. Gonzales - he's done, he's over - let's move on & effectively change something that will offer more people a chance to achieve their American Dream.

rukidding: Yes the attorney general can hire and fire whomever. But you are missing the point of how "unethical" it is to fire attorneys that are clearly in the middle of investigations. What message does that give to Americans?
It sure doesn't give anyone job security to know that you can be fired for absolutely no reasons. How can anyone live an American dream, if it can be taken away from you so quickly?
America has lost ethical standards starting from corporations to the government. If no one is held accountable for these acts, then we ALL lose the American dream.

i agree w/ wickey... i've love my kid and i've got all the material stuff i need. the dream remains unfulfilled, tho. i've gotta keep hammering away at the 8 to 5 job until the kid has gotten a little more thoroughly grown (8 more years? nine?), then it'll be time to abandon the house, the cars, the facade that i've built and get down to the business of doing what i wanna do. the good news, is that i've got it pretty cushy until then. life could be worse, no?

I think to him "living the American dream" means going from being poor to being very rich and powerful without having to work too hard and without having the burden of caring about ethics or other people. By that definition, he succeeded. Sadly, living the American dream used to mean something much finer. Perhaps to many of us it still does.

I guess that would depend on your definition of living the American dream. It seems to be different for everyone. Apparently he was not living your version of the American Dream. Most people who say they are living the American dream aren't living my version of it and apparently not yours either but I guess it is open to interpretation. The new American Dream seems to be get everything you want at whatever cost so you can be better than your neighbor.

I guess that means Gonzales' and Tony Montana's version of the "American Dream" were 100% similar to each other.

I completely agree, but I imagine that Gonzales probably said that, because he achieved a very high position in the government and he saw that as a great success. And it would have been had he acted with integrity.

He acted in the same manner most people in his position act, unethically, morally deficient and self-centered. The American dream to which you are referring started dying in the sixties, it was killed off in the seventies under the Nixon administration. As a society we are rotting from withing with our lack of integrity and honesty. Our government is a joke, our economy is a paper tiger about to go up in flames because of greed and people today are generally apathetic as long as the bad news doesn't affect them. What happened to the great America in which I grew up?

The America Dream is conceived to mean different things to different people. To some it merely means having a roof over head and three meals a day. To others it may mean having the opportunity to acquire as much wealth as you possibly can get. Legally or illegally

The American Dream was always bettering your standard of living by enjoying the fruits of your labor, all under the freedom guaranteed by the Constitution.
Gonzales represents forces that destroy the Constitution and enslave the people of the country. Could it be he was just engaging in political rhetoric?
