They work exactly the same way as a laser pointer does. The electricity excites electrons, that then vibrate at a frequency to emit light. The term laser is derived as an acronymn from "Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation"

Cutting lasers are VERY highly focussed and VERY powerful.

A simply GOOGLE of "How laser works" might be a start for more info.

Also asking how a LASER works, is not really ideally placed under "Printers" questions is it ?

A laser printer is the same concept as an inkjet printer, it just uses toner instead of ink. All this means is that the cartridge that you will be installing will be 5 times as big in size and price as a normal inkjet. The advantages are that it will last you around 3000 pages instead of around 200, it will be much faster and have better quality. This day and age they are the way to go.
