Mahogany didn't really become fashionable until Louis XVI ...the cabinetmakers depended mostly on walnut, pear wood cherry and oak. It became more and more fashionable during the Neoclassical period to use a veneer of plain mahogany, imported from Central America and the West Indies.... a hard, close-grained mahogany which was strikingly veined or mottled. Finely chiseled mounts in a variety of antique motifs such as scrolls, fretwork, interlaced bands and palmettes, columns and caryatids, or plaques with classical scenes were used as decoration for furniture with mahogany veneer. There were beautiful pieces with marquetry made of kingwood, satinwood, rosewood, fruit woods, tulip wood, lemon wood, etc., which were used to lighten up the look of the pieces.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
