They use to be called Trivets, but be very careful and read the tags. Some say "not for hot foods/pans". I kid you not. What use are they if you can't use them for hot pots and dishes!?!

I went to a large department store and picked up a couple, when I got to check-out, the clerk said "you can't use those for hot plates". It seems several had been brought back because of this. I guess they were for decorations only.

I now use pretty hot pads, the kind that we take food out of the over with.

we call them pot holders as well...but if you are reffering to the metal ones they are called trivets
