My husband sometimes drives my 2006 VW Jetta. It's a manual 5 speed on the floor. When he drives it, he'll start by shifting into 1st, go to 2nd, 3rd, and then shift right into 5th skipping 4th altogether. Is this good for my car? He says it doesn't hurt anything, that it's actually good for gas mileage. I take extra care with my car and I say it can't be good for it. I want him to stop doing it. Someone help. Is this good or bad for my car?

Shifting into a higher gear from a lower gear at any speed is completely safe. There is nothing that could hurt your car by doing this, and by doing this it does get the most out of your gas mileage Simply the longer you drive with lower RPM's the less gas you will use. That is why manuals get better mileage generally. Anyway, as long as he does not shift into lower gears on accident( shifting to, lets say first gear, going 60 miles an hour would simply blow your transmission out, but its also very hard to get it in there going that fast unless you are really trying. ) he will be fine.

He's right on all accounts. In fact, some less fuel-efficient cars have features built into them that forces the driver to skip gears when not driving heavily. It is a great way to get more fuel economy, and has absolutely no poor effect on the car unless he shifts way too low, which can happen with any gear.

Those little squirts (Jetta's) have an amazing amount of torque and horsepower. I've dirven costomers Jettas and unententionally skipped gears without knowing it.
As long as the car does not violently shake or sputter when skipping gears there's absolutely no reason to worry. There's plenty of gear ratio overlap in the transmission to handle skipping gears.

Have a good day!

The "best" answer in this question merits no credit by any ability. The analogy itself is ridiculous. comparing a well-liked instruction manual transmission to a ten velocity motorbike is previous laughable. in this analogy, you may want to hit each and every kit additionally on the before all the way down to first, or i assume your tranny could fall off... Skipping gears is advantageous in ANY instruction manual transmission, as long as you're taking care to rev journey. in case you're shifting, as an occasion, from 4th to 6th and accomplish that at 4000 rpm, (or besides the fact that RPMs your particular vehicle ought to flow from 5th from 6th) there is not any longer something incorrect with that throughout any respect. comparable factor with the different kit exchange. Rev matching is the main.
