FireStorm's answer is correct in essence. A miscarriage is the death or loss of a fetus before it reaches full term, namely 8.5 to 9 months. A miscarriage can be caused by a number of things:
1. Physical or genetic abnormality of the fetus (most common)
2. Lack of proper blood supply to the fetus
3. Trauma to the woman's abdomen from an accident or fall
4. Problem with the womb

Miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy in the first 20 weeks. About 15 to 20 percent of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, and more than 80 percent of these losses happen before 12 weeks. This doesn't include situations in which you lose a fertilized egg before you get a positive pregnancy test. Studies have found that 30 to 50 percent of fertilized eggs are lost before a woman finds out she's pregnant, because they happen so early that she goes on to get her period on time. If you lose a baby after 20 weeks of pregnancy, it's called a stillbirth

A miscarriage is the common lay non medical term for an abortion--It is NOT the same as a termination of pregnancy-which is a therapeutic abortion.

It is the spontaneous expulsion of the foetus before it is viable.

Miscarriage" is the lay term for the natural or accidental termination of a pregnancy at a stage where the embryo or the fetus is incapable of surviving.

The termination of a pregnancy before the fetus is viable, as a result of natural causes (not medical intervention).

Technically the term for miscarriage is spontaneous abortion. The baby, for whatever reason, died and was expelled prior to delivery.

Usually people reserve the term abortion for induced abortions -- abortions that were intentional.
