I've listened to it a bunch of times and the lyrics seem to be talking about two different things.

"The Flame" is a hit power ballad by Cheap Trick, released 1988. The success of the song brought the group out of a mini-slump and back into music industry prominence.

The song was initially released on the album Lap of Luxury, and reached #1 on the American Billboard Hot 100 in 1988 when issued as a single. It also reached #1 in Australia.

The song's lyrics can be heard as a longing for a lost lover, or as a statement between two people who truly love each other. They're saying that they will always be there for each other. Their love will never end and through all the ups and downs of life, they'll still be there, going through it together.

Despite being the band's only number one single, it has rarely been covered, unlike other Cheap Trick hits such as "Surrender" or "I Want You to Want Me".

It's about loss.

The Flame - Cheap Trick

Another night slowly closes in and I feel so lonely
Touching heat freezing on my skin I pretend you still hold me
I'm going crazy, I'm losing sleep
I'm in too far, I'm in way too deep over you
I can't believe you're gone
You were the first, you'll be the last

CHORUS:
Wherever you go I'll be with you
Whatever you want I'll give it to you
Whenever you need someone to lay your heart and head upon
Remember after the fire after all the rain
I will be the flame
I will be the flame

Watching shadows move across the wall feels so fright'ning
I wanna run to you, I wanna call, but I've been hit by lightning
Just can't stand up for falling apart
Can't see through this veil across my heart over you
You'll always be the one
You were the first, you'll be the last

CHORUS

I'm going crazy, I'm losing sleep
I'm in way too deep over you
You'll always be the one
You were the first, you'll be the last

Basically about some guy who has broken up with his girl. Probably mostly her leaving him. He's describing what it's like being without her (unable to cope, breathe, think straight, etc). As far as the chorus goes, he basically means if she ever needs him, he'll be there for her always. When he says "I will be the flame" He's probably referencing being "eternal" like an eternal flame - ALWAYS being there for her if she needs him. The 2 versus are just him in pain over losing her.
