I could enter into a long explanation, but I would rather suggest that to make it easier, set it up so you only click once, always! This is the way I set up all my machines. To do this, got to Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, and select "Click once to..." at the bottom, and Accept.
Now everything will work with one click.
It will take some getting used to, but once you do get used to it, you won´t go back!

The rule is simple enough. When opening a file or folder, you double click as the first click is to highlight that file or folder. All Hyperlinks including E-Mail Adresses, Web Links etc. only require one click. However, if you open a folder and select "Tools" then "Folder Options", in the "General" tab you can select "Single Click to Open an Item". From then on, you only have to click once to open anything.

Most pc's are setup to: click 1 time = select(to highlight or to drag), click 2 times=open or execute.
