I was once dealing with tons of aircraft engine parts and for some reason it was way easier for me to look at american dates since i just need to take a look at the first number to know which months certain parts belonged to. Its easier to sort them out by monthly quartiles. If i still required further information on which day of the month it was, i could easily look at the 2nd number.
As an asian, intially, it was a pain trying to get used to american dates. Personally i feel that american dates could be advantageous because they can be "easily" read. However I do agree with you on the part about making more sense going from smallest to largest as i feel that its more organized.
Both dating systems have their advantages and disadvantages.

Mostly for categorizing. When you file papers or documents, the easiest way to look for a current file of the year you are in is by the month then by calendar date. I always thought about this too and looked it up a few years ago and this is the only explanation I could find on it. (don't remember where) but it has to do with collating and filing systems as far back as 1650 if I remember correctly. If you find out on the net email me the info and vice versa - great question thanks.

Good question. I don't have the answer unfortunately.
It probably has to do with America's Founding Fathers trying to distance themselves from anything British. So anything that was different from England, was deemed good enough for Americans. That's the best answer I can come up with, since there are numerous examples of this in other instances.

I think its because in The English language when you say a date out loud its always starting with the month first, ex. August 29, 2007. Its just following the order to avoid confusion. In Spanish for example when they speak a date its always with the date first, 28 de agosto, 2007.

It's another conspiracy theory haha
Nah, I kid :)
I find it strange also, smallest to largest is what is most common.
But then again, it could be because they like to different and stuff.
So they also throw in the Fahrenheit and the strange system of measuring stuff. Metrics are way easier :)
So, it's like what Bobby said, it's like driving on the other side of the road, which to me is also another differential XD

The most logical way to write a date is YEAR / MONTH / DAY with the month as a number. That makes it easier to sort by computer.
The format the we use in the US was used at least as far back as the Declaration of Independence.

Because when we actually verbally say the date it's almost always in that format.
Today is August 27, 2007

ummmm,,, hmmm, i never really thought about it! good question though! i think it is because then the first two numbers stay the same longer, so you just change the last one. if you were writing on a chalk board and you just wanted to change the first number, for the day, it may not work if you go from a one diget to a two diget because it is longer. that is the only reason i could think of.

lol not a clue, but what I do is write the day followed by the month in WORDS so today would be 27th August 07, that way I get to do it the way I have always known it and it does not mess up many of their forms.............after doing it the way I was taught it is one of those things that I get so confused about............
regards
