Bush is trying to put a new face on his administration, hoping to take attention away from the same old incompetence and malfeasance.
And it appears he's stupid enough to think Congress is gonna approve Chertoff.

Pressure from Republicans, not the President, has probably been what helped him decide to do the right thing and resign. It will help us put another of the Administration's corrupt people on ice. Once the Congress is able to focus on the real issues and not the wrong doing of the Administration, if that is possible with so much corruption, maybe we can get things done toward health care reform, election reform, banning lobbying and much more. Unfortunately there are Republicans in the Senate and one in the White House who nix any good legislation that does come from the House or from the total Congress anyway. We will need to wait for the new Congress before we can expect any real progress. With a Democratic controlled Congress, both houses strongly, and the White House also controlled by the Democrats we can begin moving toward the healthcare reform we badly need, toward repairing our reputation world wide, and much more.
Resigning was one of the best decisions Alberto Gonzalez has ever made. Maybe with him gone conversation and focus can be diverted to other important things. Instead of the negatives that make the GOP look bad because of the Administration's incompetence and corruption we can start moving forward toward bringing our people out of Iraq, focus more on Bin Laden and Al Qaeda, and start setting the stage for more progressive legislation that will come after the Democrats win the next election by a landslide.

I think it is a little late.
Most of the damage has been done. They have what...about a yr left. Bush and his Cronies should have have left after the first term. They had done enough damage then. If they had any decency in them they would all resign with what little dignity they have left.

I think the Democratic congress is doing the exact same thing as the Republican congress did to Clinton, its called pay back and that's what our government has become, everybody said if the democrats get elected to congress the only thing they will do is go after Bush and to hell with us. How true.

I couldn't care less. He doesn't help me put food on my family's table or gas in my car every day. I stopped caring what Washington does a long time ago. Just for the record, I don't think he's being "forced." Pres. Bush always said it was going to be up to him (the Attorney Gen.)

I'm sick of "Investi-gate". These wich hunts have to stop. The Dems have paralyzed the govenrment. That's why their approval ratings are even lower than Bush's. They should be more interested in investigating where OBL is then investigating the Whitehouse.
