Let

w = width

2w - 1 = length

28 = perimeter

- - - - - - - -

Perimeter formula

P = 2L + 2W

28 = 2(2w - 1) + 2w

Distributive peoperty on the right side of the equation

28 = 4w - 2 + 2w

collecting like terma

28 = 6w - 2

Transpose 2

28 + 2 = 6w - 2 + 2

Collect like terms

30 = 6w

Divide both sides of the equation by 6

30 / 6 = 6w / 6

30/6 = w

5 = w

The width is 5 inches

Let x = width

Equation:
2([2x - 1] + x) = 28
2(2x - 1 + x) = 28
2(3x - 1) = 28
6x - 2 = 28
6x = 30
x = 5

Answer: the width is 5 inches.

Proof:
2([2{5} - 1] + 5) = 28
2([10 - 1] + 5) = 28
2(9 + 5) = 28
2(14) = 28
28 = 28

2w-1+2w-1+2w=28 inches
2w-1+2w-1+2w/2=28/2
2w-1+2w-1=16
4w1-1=16
4w/4-1=16/4
w-1+1=4+1
w=4+1
w=5
