Yes of course, when you start to skip a month or two or they become irregular you are close to the end of it. You should be close at 51 but I have had some friends that went to 59. The general guide used to be 35 years and that's what I did. Heavy is normal and can be a real pain in the keester. Try not to do heavy lifting or you will have one for 3 weeks and then start right back up again.

Regarding your monthly, they usually come more irregular when menopause starts. But yes you still have periods. And as for the mood swings, sweats & hot flashes, they vary from woman to woman, as does the length of the menopause. It can last for years, everyone is different. I was lucky, I had a hysterectomy when I was 38, so my menopause started early and was rather light in my opinion. I did have hot flashes, mostly at night. The information I have given you is from what I have heard from women in my life. Hope this helps some.

Yes women in menopause still have the monthly, in fact a very heavy monthly is symptom of menopause. You might want to have a check with your doctor for some tests. I had the tests and required a D&C and havent had anything since, about 10 years ago. Hope this helps.

55 here.

You are definitely in menopause. It will be irregular so always be prepared!

It can get heavier and then lighter. I was finished at age 52. Sounds like you are almost there. When you go 1 year with no period, its all over.

But look out because now the "heat" will be on unless you get low-dose Estrogen. Didn't want to take the drug so I weathered the storm. It is not for the faint-hearted.

Sorry to break this to ya but if you're like me, you've got another 7 years of it. If you're still having a period, you're not in menopause. Menopause is described as having gone a year without one.
You might want to check with the doc to make sure the heavy periods are normal, which they may be. The heavy bleeding may be caused by something else though, such as fibroids.

It will get heavier for many women as you go through the change..you should see your Dr. as a hysterectomy may be needed or just a check up, hormones play a major role in this, you did not say if you are having hot flashes or mood swings, do not rely on your family to tell you these things they will exaggerate for their own benefit...this could last for 10 years so see a Dr.

I would suggest you see your gynecologist to get the best response. That is the way you learn if you are in menopause or not. They will run a TSH and FSH on you. If you are having heavier periods, there may be another reason other than going into menopause.

From one senior lady answering you personal question.

Please see your GYN doctor soon.

It seems like you would be a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy.

I started menopause at 52, but it just stopped. No heat flashes until afterwards, and then they lasted the better part of two years.

I think it is time you visited your gynaecologist.

I had regulars until I was 55 yrs old. Then it was every other month for a year, then every 3 or four months. Then finally at the presidential inauguration? my last and it was a dooozey!
Not everyone has an emotional transition, I didn't suffer much in that way.
Good-bye and good ridance to that era of life. Blessings.......

Hah I know how you feel. Am the same age as you and mine seem to get worse and more frequent. Go see your GP and ask for an FSH check - it will sometimes (only sometimes though) prove menopause.
