Will it affect my liver as my liver readings are also no good?

Well, Red Yeast Rice helps to maintain a healthy cholesterol (no supplement can make medical claims). It does this with the naturally occurring statins in the Red Yeast Rice (which is where Statin drugs came from).

There are some people (around 3% of the population, I believe) that have an allergic reaction to statins, which shows in muscle pain/weakness, and can lead to kidney and/or liver problems over time. However, there are a lower amount of statins in RYR than in the drugs, and so there is a lower occurance of the allergy affecting people when taking RYR vs. the drugs.

It's safest to check with your doctor to see if it would be safe for you to ingest any statins, but most people have no trouble with it.

I can't tell you the value of red
yeast rice and high cholesterol.
I do remember reading a warning about this supplement, but can't remember what for now.
But I DO KNOW what will lower your cholesterol. Give it
about 3 months tho. They now have cholesterol tests at
the drug store to check for
efficacy. 1,000mg PURE
Norwegian (or arctic seas)
fish oil-- You must be absolutely assured that there is no pollution in these fish
and the fish are not farmed.
Oh, the dosage 1,000mg
3X/day. Test after 3 months.

Well out of all the organs in your body you can actually lose up to 25% of your liver before there is nothing you can do. I would do a good liver detox and about your high cholesterol.... High Cholesterol never killed anyone , the plaquing is what kills you. Look into a nattozime suppliment for the natto bacteria that cause the palquing. Then at least your arteries will be clean. EDTA taken orally is also a good one for a few months at about 6 a day. Pharmex Fish oil taken at about 3 tbs a day will also be helpful. Plantsterols are also a product you should look into.

Did a little research on Red Yeast Rice. It apparently is a component that is in prescription cholesterol lowering meds.

It is very effective at lowering cholesterol, but should also be taken under a physician's care, for like prescription meds, it will affect the liver, and you will periodically need to have bloodwork performed.

Red yeast can indeed work to lower ldl levels and raise hdl levels. This works in the liver and as you say you have poor liver readings I believe this product is not for you. Neither would be niacin as that action is also in the liver. You may want to talk to your doctor. You could take 2 grams of plant sterols as in products like Cholest Off from Nature made. You can also reduce saturated fast to less than 7 grams daily, and increase soluble fiber to 7 to 25 grams daily. Drugs alone will not do it, it involves lifestyle changes, meaning if you live for fast food this needs to change.

This is a question best answered by a professional, especially since "not so good" is not a medical diagnosis of your liver issues.

You should consult a Naturopathic physician if they practice in your state, as they have the training to interpret your liver test and advise you on supplements, including Red Yeast Rice.

if you cant tolerate statins(i cant), another thing to try is Plant sterols, which are sold over the counter, also in certain margerines. Keep you doctor informed, as to what you are taking for your cholesterol problem.

Try flax seed oil. I took it for 6 months and it lowered my number by 50 points. I did not alter my diet or do additional exercise. It dissolves the fat in the blood and washes it out.
