No no no!
First, the story going around is about Mars, not Pluto. Second, the story is just wrong anyway. Mars cannot get close enough to look like anything other than a bright star. And third, Mars will not be particularly close to Earth this summer, although it was in summer of 2003 when this false story started.

It's true, you did hear it. If you say you hear it, I'm not going to say you didn't.

Do you believe everything you hear or read? Do you try to figure it out for yourself, if its true or not?

Pluto is at least 3 billion miles away from Earth, sometimes almost 5 billion miles. The whole Earth is only 24,000 miles around. The moon (the real moon) is about 240,000 miles away. So Pluto is more than 10,000 times farther away than the moon. You wouldn't even be able to see with without a telescope.

Wow, Pluto coming around Earth for some revenge for knocking it off the planet list! Damn those scientists! Pluto is a planet!

But I think if a planet would be heading towards Earth that would be the talk of the week in all the news and current events.

False.

Pluto is so far away that it cannot be seen with the naked eye. The New Horizons spacecraft that was launched on January 19, 2006 will arrrive in the vicinity of Pluto in 2015 and will allow us to study Pluto and its moons more in depth.

Sorry, but it's just another "Urban Legend". Check out snopes.com or Univ. of Texas Astronomy Dept. So don't stay up late for nothing! Incidently, it's Mars not Pluto.
