I have a male betta- Ariel. He is a joy. But I want other fish too. Like 2 comet goldfish, 2 dalmation mollies, 1 swordtail, and 1 hybrid platy. Will a 36 gal tank be enough for them? Are they all compatible? And can I put Ariel (Male betta) in with them?

OK I FOUND OUT IN WIKIPEDIA THAT
"Goldfish may kill a Betta by nipping off all there fins!"

SO ARIEL WILL NOT BE IN THE TANK WITH GOLDFISH!

NO! As mentioned by another answerer, bettas prefer higher temps, around 80 degrees. This is not good for goldfish. If you just like their color, there are other fish that would fit in with the betta, like platies and swordtails. But, a male betta may attack them because of their bright colors.
Also, mollies do better with a little sea salt in their water.
What to do? Ask your friendly neighborhood fish store employee what fish he/she would recommend. You can actually place quite few very attractive and interesting fish in this size a tank.
If you have to get goldfish, get 2 smaller tanks for now and keep them separate.
Some recommended fish for betta tank:
6-8 neon tetras, 6-8 black skirt tetras, 2 corydoras catfish (your choice), 1 bristlenose plecostamus, a couple blue or gold gouramis, a couple angelfish.

Comet goldfish need 35 gallons each and are not compatible with other tropical fish so nix on the goldfish. Mollies and Platys are great fish and easy to take care of. I've had alot of aggersion problems with swordtails so I would avoid those too. Tetras and Guppies get along great with Platys and Mollies. With a 36 gallon tank you can get around 15 of these fish! For a specatcular tank get 6 neon tetras 2 dalmation mollies 2 hybrid platys and 4 guppies aquascape it with live plants (anything that says hygro on it is great)
I've heard of keeping Bettas in community tanks but I would'nt take the chance because I really think that you would end up with Ariel in that 36 gallon tank alone.
Hope I could help and congrats on starting up a freshwater community tank!

Goldfish only go with other goldfish. 2 comets would be happy in a 36 gallon tank. You could even have 3 in there if you wanted. The mollies and such need their own tank and require different conditions than a goldfish.
I'd go for the goldfish tank. GF get big and act like little puppies rather than fish so they are a joy to keep. But I'm a little biased when it comes to goldfish, I just love them.

I wouldn't suggest mixing those particular types of fish. Goldfish prefer cooler water than the livebearers you mention and the betta would do well in water even warmer than the livebearers. It would be best not to mix them and keep fish that all prefer the same temperature range.

That said, is it possible to do it? Yes. The goldfish can live in the higher temperatures and be ok. But it's still not the best idea.

Another issue you will face is the fact that the comets will out grow that tank within a few years at most. Fancy goldfish would be a much better choice for that tank size.

your betta can be with the goldfish, i would not mix with the others though. goldfish are very high in amonia and you need to make sure you have a good filter on your tank. 36 gal is good, your goldfish might get big. but just don't get too many.
have fun
