I found some land that I would like to buy that's currently covered in Christmas Trees. I know that the pesticides for Christmas Trees cause cancer. I would like to know, I I buy the land, and dig up all the trees, then is there some way for me to clense the land from the pesticides still in the soil, or do I just have to wait, and if I have to wait, how long.

Thanks.

Of course it depends on what pesticides were used. Some stay around longer than others. Your best bet would be to remove the trees, plow and start growing cover crops for a few years, plow them under each season and start anew. Not only would you be adding organic matter in the form of "green manure" you'd also be activating the microorganisms that will be digesting the pesticides as well. If you have a source of good clean compost, use that to introduce and feed the microorganisms.

Contact your County Extension Agent and ask about organic certification for land. That is how long must the land be free of pesticides before it can be considered safe for organic farming. Each state has it's own regulations. I realize you didn't ask about commercial farming, I'm just trying to determine how long it will take your type soil in your climate to be pesticide free.
