Brand name doesn't matter. It's all about the components and what's inside.

Quality of the screen is a big factor as well. Try looking up notebook review sites to get a general idea of good and bad of particular models.

Lots of these companies use the same parts from various manufacturers.

Acer is more of a budget brand but not bad quality either. Dell has some decent deals but also some ridiculously expensive stuff. Asus is overall great brand and quality. I wouldn't go with HP or Compaq.

You can't just say one thing about a brand though. They each have good and bad models and personal experiences will be drastically different.

What will you be using this notebook for? Need something with good battery life and is portable? Or are you looking for a desktop replacement?

From my personal experience, I would settle with HP/Compaq, Dell, Acer, Asus in order. I would suggest not getting Acer or Asus if possible.

Although some time ago, I used to do computer components wholesale. Acer has terrible RMA ratio(customer return). I would never personally buy them. Asus makes good motherboards, but they have not been in notebook market too long, I would not even bother considering it. I like Dell a lot, but mostly stripped out and made-to-fit. What I learned after so long years of messing with so many computers, I give deep respect to HP computers.
Brand DOES matter! Stick with American Brands not Taiwanese brands

i would recommend an acer. through personal experience, HP's are good but they don't last very long. Dell's are pretty good too, but you can get the same quality and life from an Acer with a better value. Last month I went notebook shopping with a friend. Everyone we asked said Acer is your best bet.

Hope this helped!

HP/Dell

don't get an acer or asus, they break easily and ususallly after the waranty is over the start to have problems.

i've had both of the acer and an asus, they both broke within a year, i got an hp 2 years ago and it still works perfectly , all i've had to do is update it with windows vista but it works great.

I would highly recommend a Toshiba laptop. You should buy a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it.
