Not sure if they are grasshoppers or crickets, but in the park next to my house, in West London there are loads in the long grass, there are tracks through the long grass where I walk my dog and you can really hear them there, on a hot day at least. There is also a family of Parakeets in the trees, and bats at night, foxes and crows and geese and seagulls nearby. A great place.

I haven't heard them recently (although I have moved to a more built up area now). That said, we did have one in our bathroom last week! :)

They must all be in my garden then because on a hot day they can be deafening.

Could be they've already mated so no use making noise to attract a mate.

Yeh... but maybe you don't hear them because they don't sound as loud or they don't usually make sound in this season....
