Algae where the first identified living organisms. It is thought that the blue-green algae were the organisms responsible for introducing oxygen in to Earths atmosphere. These critters are also linked with cyno-bacteria and others that are very closely related to algae.

I cannot say that viruses were the first organsims because viruses are not considered as true independent living organisms . Bacteria could be the first, since they are single celled and have very simple structures. They are considered as prokaryotes, meaning they do not have a true nucleus. Second could be eukaryotes, such as protozoans. And according to the endosymbiotic theory, prokasryotes could have joined together to form eukaryotes.
