The doors are about 5 feet tall on average. I asked my tour guide if this was because people used to be shorter. She said "No, its because it was to prevent horses from entering houses during invasions." I just cant believe that. It seems like a silly answer.

could be. most of those buildings are hundreds of years old. you see that a lot in washington DC too, because 200 years ago people were about 6-12 inches shorter on average since nutrition wasnt as good, though i dont know if it has improved much in the mid east or if thats the reason there

This is probably true. It would have been a defensive measure.
An intruder would be at a disadvantage either leading with his head of crouching at the knees. Either way would make him more vulnerable.

Most historians attribute low doorways as an attempt to conserve heat during winter. Don't know if where you are has cold winters or not.

well i'm from the middle east and i never saw short doors before!!! either way i just want you to know that Arabs vary from short to very tall people.

For example before WWII people
in Japan was about 6 inches shorter than they
are now.

no its is common some older european hosues in teh country had teh same thing, you have to bend down if you bend its easier to cut your head off
