I live in Northern New Jersey and was wondering if I can afford a house by the beach in North Carolina. I'm looking for an area with good schools and a low crime rate. If anyone can give me an overview on the beach areas in NC, I would really appreciate it.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself properly. I didn't mean right on the beach. A few miles inland is fine.

So you probably won't be able to afford waterfront property for only 300,000 (certainly not a house on the water). If you want to be within a few miles it won't be any trouble at all.

Do you need to be in an area with employment opportunities? If so, I would suggest the Wilmington, NC area. If not, I'd go further north or south. To the north is the Hampstead area in Pender county which is growing quickly and has easy access to Wilmington. To the south is Brunswick county, one of the fastest growing counties in the country and it's between Myrtle Beach and Wilmington.

There are a decent number of houses in the area priced around 300,000. Taxes are low and the schools are pretty good in suburban Wilmington. The Pender county schools (specifically the Topsail Beach school district) are highly rated. Crime isn't bad in the area, mostly restricted to parts of downtown. I would say traffic is difficult, but you live in NJ, so you'll think it's easy.

ON the coast - NO for 300K
Near the coast - possibly
I know a Realtor that specializes in waterfront properties in NC - IF you want his contact info - I would be more than happy to share. Or go to www.realtor.com. Drop me an e-mail if you want his name and number (e-mail etc)

Hope this helps, Good Luck
