Have you tried adding Calgon to the water to start? It's like a small water softening product just for the wash. Friends use Borax instead. I'm not that picky. I use liquid detergent without all the bleaches or fabric softeners and dissolve it in the water before adding clothes. Chlorine bleach is out! Not for my high mineral water. Instead I make up a bucket of hot water and OxyClean and soak overnight before washing whites that need a boost.

Water softening liquids are easily available in local chemists shops. You can use them while washing the clothes in hard water.
