So now it transpires that we, the British taxpayers, will be footing the bill for the killer of headteacher Phillip Lawrence?

According to media reports, Learco Chindamo, the culprit, will be getting a new home, new identity, and intensive security protection costing up to ONE MILLION a year. And we'll be paying for it!

Do you agree that British justice is a thing of the past? And that Chindamo should have been deported back to Italy? How is it that the judges in other countries manage to interpret the same Human Rights legislation in a more rational way than the lunatics in our British courts?

I feel so, so sorry for the family of Phillip Lawrence.

NDGBILL - if you'd bothered to read my post properly, you'd note I NEVER mentioned 'revenge'. You brought that up - not me. I merely suggested that something is bloody unfair about the fact that currently in the UK, the guilty have more rights than the victims. Why on earth have you responded so aggressively???!

Chindamo is a product of our society, he has lived here since the age of 5 and has little or no connections with Italy. He is our problem and we have to deal with it. The protection issue is a separate matter which I don't agree with and which the State has no obligation to undertake. Removing the Act would allow politicians to impose ever more intrusive and onerous legislation on us without limit. Before the HRA we could only invoke our rights if we had sufficient cash to bring a case in Strasbourg, now it can be raised before any UK court. British justice would be alot poorer without the Act.

For other countries, this legislation has been in place for many years and doesn't raise the sort of hysterical reaction we have here. It's also seen as fundamental to the relationship between the individual and the State.

So how do we punish murderers?

We decided not to hang them - so what gives the gutter press permission to decide which ones should be lynched?

Should they ever be let out of prison? As the law stands at the moment they can be let out on licence once the parole board thinks they are no longer a danger to the public. We can change that, but remember that it's cheaper to keep someone in a luxury hotel than in prison and you're footing the bill.

As for Chindamo, yes he is scum. But what happens when he's served his time? The Home Office still wants to send him to Italy although the Courts have decided otherwise. He left Italy when he was 5 and doesn't speak the language. Why should we treat him differently from any other kind of scum? If we send him to Italy, he's no longer under the control of a probation officer and we can't revoke his licence. All he's got to do is get an Italian passport and there's no mechanism to stop him returning to the UK a free man.

Please do not engage mouth until brain is in motion.

I really cannot understand this. He should be put on the next plane back to Italy (I assume he has some relatives there who should be made to take responsibility for him). Why should the British people have to pay for this thug. All I can hope is that someone will find out his new name, where he lives and mete out some real justice. They keep going on about his human rights, what about the rights of Philip Lawrence and his family? Have any of these do-gooders thought about Mrs. Lawrence and how she is going to cope knowing this monster is loose somewhere? I don't think so!!!

Who is this NDGBill? Is he trying to tell us a 15yr old does not know right from wrong? Does not know that when he carries a knife and uses it on a defenceless person this is a crime? He quotes Christian values but the bible says an eye for an eye, it does not say you have to be a certain age before this applies. It is because of the defensive attitudes of people like NDGBill that there are so many problems with teenagers today. People like him think they can solve all the countries problems by counselling and mollycoddling (perhaps he's one of these people who like to send the criminals on holidays and safari) when to be quite honest punishment needs to be meted out.

The content of your question has left me speechless. It is so sad that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes appear the be treated like the victim and not the guilty. I know that he served his sentence so why can't he be left to his own devises to fend for himself. Then that is not possible as he is supposedly still a danger to the community..

Why can't he be deported under the migrants act as he is not a British citizen so why is he being pampered to? I feel the same so sorry for the Lawrence family. Would you blame them if the took justice into their own hands but then they wouldn't as they as law abiding citizen and this is what the judge is relying on that they rest of society will look favourably on his ruling about this person. He got that so wrong

Send him back to Italy and let him get on with it like the law has left the Lawrence family to deal with this whole sordid debacle.

You are right justice in this country is a thing of the past. This is the inheritence left to us by the likes of Lord Longford and his cronies.

Problem is what are we all going to do about it..take it laying down as we normally do and just complain about the injustice of it all?.

I think that we are now a nation of backbiting wimps with little or no substance left in us.

It's a shame you didn't post any links to show your info source. It means we can't be sure whether this is fact or scuttlebutt. If it is fact, then I have to say it's a disgrace.

This man committed his crime and (although some would disagree) has done the time. He should be released but on no account should he be given a new home, identity and protection at taxpayers' expense. He should walk out of the prison gate, just like any other ex-con, and take his chances in life just like anyone else has to. If he feels that this would compromise his personal security, then he should be given the opportunity to leave the UK for a destination of his choice.

Getting new home and identity? Were did you get that idea? Post the links.

Yes it's true he is going free, and that won his case against being deported back to Italy. But a new home and identity paid by the goverment, that's not true.

By the way I think anyone, juvenile or adult, should be send to jail for life if they murder anyone. At 15 anyone knows that murdering people is wrong.

it is merely strategies bogglingly stupid. So the lesson to be learnt right here... Kill somebody and you get a unfastened residing house paid by employing the taxpayers... that's not a thank you to convey crime expenses down. The justice device could desire to be... in case you're taking someones life then you definately lose yours not a slap on the wrists by employing serving some years in detention center then instructed you are able to stay right here in a advantageous new residing house as long as you save your nostril sparkling.Whats to end him from killing somebody else? He won't be in a position to be deported because it breaches his human rights... what approximately Mr Lawrences' rights whilst he grew to become into alive? people who commit severe crimes which includes homicide/rape and so on could desire to have no human rights in any respect. there is not any such element as justice in this usa anymore, it wont be long in the past its a unfastened for all and then the police/government will have no capability to do something because it will be too late. I lost my female pal after a fulfillment and run whilst she grew to become into in Toronto, her killer is serving a minimum of 25 years... nevertheless not adequate in my e book yet he will lose out on 25 years of his life wherein era i desire he has learnt a lesson. Too many workstation people who shouldnt have any capability over judges in this usa are to blame besides because of the fact the government. i desire he meets a bloody and intensely painful end very quickly.

And what exactly do YOU consider JUSTICE.

Do you equate JUSTICE WITH REVENGE and that is why you are so riled up?

Revenge is NOT justice especially if you are a Christian.

Chindamo was only 15 years old at the time .YES, it does matter that he was only 15 and not 35 !!

The British system of justice like many other democratic countries excluding the US ,is based upon/driven by rehabilitation and data shows clearly that this approach is crucial in reducing the rates of re-offending.

The US where the Justice system is driven more by revenge than anything else, has the world's highest rates of imprisonment (800/100,000 while in most European countries the rate is ONLY 65-85 /100,000).

Worse still is that the recidivision rates in the US is enormously higher than in European countries and most experts aver that this is to the US system NOT concentrating on REHABILITATION but on REVENGE .

So people like you who are driven obviously by REVENGE are in fact dangerous in that you are espousing a view that HAS PROVEN ITSELF to lead to even higher rates of crime and recidivision.

The whole concept of JUSTICE is the weighing of all RELEVANT factors and coming to a decision.People like you consider only REVENGE not realizing it will only make matters incredibly more dire.

You need to supply evidence about all these millions you are that are now going to be spent on Chindamo.I could find NOTHING about these millions on my Google Search.

In some western democracies, such as Canada ,a 15 year old convicted for murder could NOT have been incarcerated as long as Chindamo was .On this basis ,Chindamo's sentence was in fact HARSH for a juvenile defendant.

You neglected to mention that he was only
