Rather surprizingly engineers are working on a narrow trough system where the person straddles the narrow trough and " urinates ". The idea came to light when an observer noted that the queues to the " ladies " were much greater than to the " mens " The idea is to install them in bars and airports where there are lots of people.
As to why girls sit down to pee, may not be true in the future.

Reasons for squatting:
1/. A built-in handicap for girls only peeing'-up-the-wall contests?
2/. An integral on-board precision targeting system for ant hill inundation?
3/. Cos it's part of a 'fun in filling the back pocket of your own jeans', fetish?
4/. Cos it really does eat grass?
5/. As everyone knows, farts can't climb too well, and that close to the ground...................home free!
6/. Jacky-lizards tickle.
7/. Even Italian leather squishes.
8/. Standing, some might miss your handbag.

they dont sit, they squat. ask em.
they dont want their butts to touch the toilet seat, so they squat... and end up peeing all over the seat! yuck!!
