its not an easy job and the best advice is to get a qualified builder in.

i work as an insurance assesor and have seen this job done by home owners with a crow bar and sledge hammers its a mess when cielings fall especially with approx 3 ton of brick work that comes down with it as well as the damage that is done to the roof. have i scared you enough into not doing it yourself, i hope so GET A QUALIFIED BUILDER!!!!! they wil do it for you at a cost of course but better than me turning up and telling you your not covered for the damage.

The ceiling/1st floor have to be supported as well as the chimney, if the ground floor is timber, this also has to be protected, sadly, I think the chimney needs protecting from you, this is definitely in the dangerous category and should not be tackled even by a competent diy er. Sorry, but I'm with the get a builder in brigade, listen to the loss assessor before this, he will have seen the results of attempts to do this, I have seen floors/ceilings come down through taking load bearing walls out, and that is simple compared to dropping chimney breasts.

you need to support the top half with an RSG spanning the two nearest load bearing walls usually means taking some of the ceiling down and it is the most horrible job to do i think thers more bricks in a chimney than the rest of the house and you will be cleaning soot up for months

The weight rests on the base of the chimney, so the only way to remove one is from the top down.

the short answer is you don't ..this really is a job for the experienced builder ..although i have done it many times nobody i know enjoys the job ..its very dirty ..and you really must know exactly how a chimney is constructed to be able to remove the bottom section and leave the top safely supported ..i am doing you a favour when i say leave it to the experts

i had this done it is a job for the pros cause it will need properly supporting on both sides of chimney and believe me you will need a big skip for all the brick that come out and get some big dustsheets its a dirty job but worth it if it opens a room up

You can knock out the chimney breast and fireplace yourself. It will not cause any damage to the wall it is attached to. You do not need any supports.

yes, it can be done. its quite easy, just need to prop the surrounding walls and ceilings and knock out a hole for rsjs to go into. after that know down the breast. any good builder will do it with ease. but it is really dirty, lots of soot, maybe be hard to find someone

Get a professional. The ceiling will need props before you do anything. Even on a living room it will still need a support.......
