Richard Sears, who along with Alvah Roebuck, built the Sears-Roebuck company into one of the largest retailers in the world until some bad acquisitions and the 1990's rise of Walmart almost put them under. They've now merged with Kmart to form Sears Holding Corp.-which makes more money off its real estate holdings than retail sales.

The name Sears comes from Richard Sears who worked with railroads as a telegraph operator in 1880. He took advantage of a refused shipment of watches - buying them on consignment I believe, eventually earning $5,000 from this 'booty'. This prompted him to set up shop and he founded his own mail order company with a another guy (Roebuck). He started placing ads, etc and they started a mail order company which eventually turned into the largest brick and mortar retailer in the USA (with help from Wall Street of course) until its decline started in the 1980s

Pretty sad, seeing Sear's demise. It was once the prized USA Buick. Now it's a mere Yugo left to fall apart at the slightest use.
No longer run by merchandisers or people who have the slightest understanding of retail, it's no wonder Sears is in the mess it's in. Being associated with Kmart hasn't helped it any. In fact that's when the ball started rolling down hill.
