Space is undetectable with a telescope when it contains no matter.
They simply found an area of space that is surrounded by some visible matter.

Just because we dont see anything in a giant hole in space does not necessarely mean that there isnt anything there.

What hole? Isn't space empty nothingness how could there be a hole in nothing?
