Boredom
And why do most relationships end?
Boredom.
Two people come together and they see something in one another and think "Wow".
But over time the wow is harder to find because you have heard all the stories and you know all the dreams and you know what each others boundaries are and you are bored.
The sex is no longer important. (WHAT!) The conversations are lacklustered. (HO HUM.) And you are thinking what can I do. So, you end the relationship because you can't figure out an answer.
Repeat:
YOU END THE RELATIONSHIP BECAUSE YOU CAN"T FIGURE OUT AN ANSWER.
That is like saying you just don't care anymore.
I have actually come to blows with an man over that phrase, "I don't care."
It is the biggest slap in the face you can give another person and it tells them you don't even want to think about them anymore.
No reason, you just don't want to think about them anymore.
How is that for petty?
"I am leaving you for no reason at all."

Thats a good question.
I would say the most petty reason for break up would be because they didn't like that persons style or the amount of money they made.

There is beauty in a breakup? This is going to take some thinking, okay, how about the realization that you are better off as "Best Friends" rather than together so you both agree to break up and it is a beautiful breakup because you are forever friends and closer than most friends have ever gotten.

You should watch Seinfeld. Your question just totally reminded me of it. Someone's always breaking up with some for stupid (but hilarious) reasons. One time a girl broke up with Jerry because she thought she saw him picking his nose when he was driving. Lol.
