Do you have to see Dawn of the Dead first to understand or understand any humor in Shaun of the Dead?

Not at all. Especially if you're talking about the new version of "Dawn of the Dead".
There are numerous references to other films in the genre throughout "Shaun of the Dead", but the comedy is rarely based on those references. Many of the references are in the way a scene is arranged, the names of characters, or a bit of similar dialogue, and don't directly impact the plot or humor of the film.
My brother has never seen any zombie movie. Ever. But he loved "Shaun of the Dead".
However, if you're interested in the references to other zombie films, the DVD of "Shaun of the Dead" has a trivia track in the special features, I believe, that points them out.

No. I never saw Dawn of the Dead and I could understand the humor going on in Shaun of the Dead. It all comes down to understanding British humor. Either you get British humor or you don't.

I hadn't seen Dawn of the Dead in many years and still found Shaun of the Dead to be a riot. You do need to understand British humor and some cultural references though.

No. Never watched Dawn of the Dead but I saw Shaun of The Dead. Shaun of the Dead was still funny.

I don't think so. I've never seen Dawn of the Dead and I thought Shaun of the Dead was quite good.

I haven't seen Dawn, but I totally loved Shaun - it is off the wall comedy - Great movie.

yeah you should! D.O.T.D. was awesome! one of the best movies ever made! ( I'm talking about the remake) you have to see it to understand shaun of the dead! It was hilarius!

It does really spoof one zombie movie it kinda spoof the whole genre of zombie movies! If you have seen one you will get the jokes.
