If your truck did not come with OEM air shocks it's not a good idea. Shock mounts are not built as load carring attaching points.
A Reese hitch with equalizing torsion bars are best. The entire truck frame is equally loaded so that the rear end third member, springs, shackles and shock bsorbers don't do all the work. You should however think about installinfg the best heavy duty shock absoberers you can lay your hands on. Bilstein, KYB and Koni are vast improvements over Monroe and Gabriel. Specialty shock absorbers such as PRO and Afco are great but may require better relocated attaching points.

Yup Air shocks are a good idea... but so are the add a leaf... if it was me, i'd go for the Air Shocks,- or even look into air springs which are made just for this type of thing...

I'd use a weight equalizing hitch, that way you regular ride when not hooked to the trailer wouldn't be changed.

Try contacting www.ridetech.com as they specialise in air spring systems. In fact they list a kit specifically for your truck.
These are 'bolt-in' kits. utilising an air spring to supplement your leafs. They can also inflate/deflate to cope with different loads.Good luck!

air shocks are a hassel, they leak, just put in heavier springs, shock mounts are not designed to hold "UP" weight, they (air shocks) will eventually break the shock mounts.
