My temps have go up every summer and it's fine - they can handle it as long as it doesn't change quickly.

The problem is that most tropical fish suitable come from planted waters and should have the same in the aquarium. Keep in mind fake is fine, you don't need real plants. You also don't need a million plants through the tank, but enough lined around to give the impression of planted waters nearby will make the fish more comfortable and willing to stay in the open.

Your best bet is a small community. Look at fish you like and research them first - if they get over 3 or 4 inches long then they become unsuitable to the tank. If they're schooling fish, keep them in groups. If they're territorial to their own kind, just keep one. If they need caves, provide caves, etc. etc. Look up silver sharks yourself and you'll quickly see how the advice you were given after the fact was right, and the store was wrong.

There are hundreds of species you can choose from. Start off this way: choose one mid water schooling fish, one bottom dwelling fish, and one 'centrepiece' fish that can live alone without an issue. An simple and common example might be: 8 neon tetra's, 6 corydora catfish, and one dwarf gourami. Something like this will give you an excellent start to a balanced community of fish that will be good in your tank for life.
