the reversing light switch is normally srewed into the bell housing ( casing ) of the gearbox. It is activated by the selector forks when you engage reverse. They sometimes fail as the contacts break inside stopping the switch from continuing the connection to earth. the best thing to do to find if the switch is faulty is remove the connector plug form the switch on the gearbox, and connecto the two terminals inside the plug together then switch the ignition on, if the reverse lights light up then replace the switch in the gearbox, but check your fuses, bulbs and contacts and the multi connecotr onto your rear light cluster too

The Reversing Lights come on automatically when you put the car in Reverse, if the lights are not coming on then try changing the bulbs, if that does not work check the fuse's (details in the cars hand book)
