A strange thing has started to happen when I start my PC, it boots up as normal, but a box comes up in notepad which says
[.shellclassinfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787.
I have tried various registery cleaners, but to no avail. Has anyone else come accross this problem, and did you find a cure?

Help please

1. Start Windows Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3. In the Advanced settings box, click to clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box and the Hide protected operating system files check box (if they are not already cleared), and then click OK.
4. Delete any occurrences of the Desktop.ini file that contains the lines described earlier in the "Symptoms" section of this article. To do so: a. Locate each of the following folders, right-click the Desktop.ini file (if the file exists in that folder), and then click Open: • drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
• drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
• drive:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
where drive is the drive on which Windows is installed.
b. Verify that the file contains the following lines:[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787
If the file contains these lines, right-click the file, click Delete, and then click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.

5. Restart your computer and verify that the issue is resolved.

You either have a virus or a trojan. DO this, disable system restore and visit http://onecare.live.com Run Microsoft's free safety scanner and it will remove all viruses, trojans, spyware, and registry errors. Now download these tools as they r free and the best of their kind.
AVG Anti virus:
http://free.grisoft.com
Spybot:

Comodo Firewall:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com
Re enable system restore and create a new restore point and u might want to scan ur pc with these tools as well.
Good Luck!

I would try and reinstall windows, first without formating your hard drive, then if the problem keeps happening, save whatever data you need, then format the hard drive and install windows from scratch. That SHOULD solve any software issues. If it's a hard ware issue, that will be harder to diagnose.

Its not a registry problem I guess, it means your window is courapted, try to repair it or restore it to the previous settings.
