My fav is life. It is a fun family game that can help with teaching about money. But it is also a great adult game.

Answering with extreme prejudice (as the creator), I hope that everyone will one day be playing Swarm. Otherwise, I'd have to say that the best game is one that has endured the passing of time: Chess. While Go certainly has it's following, and so do Checkers and Backgammon, Chess is the one with the broadest appeal and greatest literary support. There are a multitude of famous Chess sets available from Star Wars to Fantasy Dragons. Only Monopoly has had that kind of variety. So Chess is currently the best. The question is can it be replaced, and what will it take to do so?

Either Monopoly or Risk:

Monopoly - Classic game, probably the basis of many other games, of buying, selling, trading and competing! There's also many other versions available today (like the one with the debit card ;D)

Risk- The best war and strategy game EVER! Nothing even comes close to it's success. Despite it's time consumption, people everywhere still love it today!

Settlers of Catan - Simple game, lots of strategies
Puerto Rico - Great game mechanic
Betrayal at the House on the Hill - totally random, including who the bad guy is
Cash & Guns - you get to point foam rubber guns at your best friends!
Wings of War - WW I aerial combat, simple but nice flow to the movements
Fury of Dracula - Beautiful board very different from other games. (2nd editions victory conditions need to be tweaked though).
Apples to Apples - sounds lame, its not, great way to find out about the way your friends & family think. Easy easy easy to learn.

Scrabble I have no doubt about it. It's superb on the Pc or even board. Could be played by a person of any age and any level of knowledge and skill. That's the beauty of it.

Scrabble. It builds vocabulary, is easy to understand, but offers a depth of strategy. It's inexpensive, and plays as well with two people as it does with 3 or 4.

Plus, it's easier to handicap if you are playing with players of various ages or skill levels.

Try some 'German style' games. They are much more strategic and better designed than the American standards. Some of the best are...

Settlers of Catan
Carcasone
Ticket to Ride
Puerto Rico
