I've seen a lot of people with mini-pets in the Guild Wars games and was wondering, how exactly does one go about getting one? I have heard that you have to be a ranger class to be able to make one, but what about the ones that were got through magazine codes? Do you still have to be a ranger? I don't really mean to ask for the codes, but is there any way to get these codes, I don't mind buying the magazine or whatever so it's not a matter of me wanting to mooch, I just don't know where to find any information about it. Pets and minipets are two totally different things.

Pets are part of being a ranger. You can get them by using the Charm Animal skill on an animal in the wilds (this is one of the first skills that rangers learn). The pet will then follow you around in explorable areas and in missions if you have the Charm Animal skill equipped on your skill bar, and will attack enemies alongside you and can perform pet attack skills. They will also level up over time and become more powerful, and many of them will also grow in size. Each character may only have one pet at a time.

Minipets are an entirely different thing, and are not restricted to the ranger class (anyone can get them). They take the form of an item in your inventory, and can be taken out or put away by double-clicking on the item (they can be taken out anywhere, including in towns and outposts). Minipets do not attack, and will just walk around and look cool. There are also several ways to get mini-pets, including from certain reward chests, birthday presents and special key codes that get released in magazines. There is no restriction on the number of minipets that each character can have.

Your actually have to differnt things confused.

A 'pet' in Guild Wars is a Ranger-only combat pet. They fight with their players and, if built right, do significant damage.

What the majority of your question is asking about is a 'mini-pet' which are basically a prestige thing to show off. Anyone can have one of those, you get them through things like magazines, in-game chests, and any CHARACTER over a year old is likely to get one. The ones in magazines are one-shots. Each magazine code only works once. [I have heard that mini-pets are compatible with Pargon shouts, some of which are more effective with larger parties.]
