I find it very interesting that people are just babbling trying to convience you or others about something, when you're just asking a question for homework...

It's a representative democracy. This is because we elect officials to represent us and create law. A direct democracy is a form of government on which everyone votes on every law.

There being no difference whatever between direct democracy and "mob rule," representative democracy is the better system.

Direct Democracy is one man, one vote. Meaning that everyone's vote is counted. Representative Democracy is breaking an area into districts and the electorate for that district casts his/hers vote based on the information they have, but sometimes they do not side with popular opinion. Which is why you can win the popular vote and still lose the election.

The US government is a 'democratic republic'. It was not created as a simple democracy because America's Founding Fathers knew that 'majority rule' would always deny liberty and freedom to those not in the majority.

No, the Founding Father's made it a republic specifically to keep the religious from seizing political power and turning against the American people.

Yes, and the military. The 2nd amendment (along with civilian control of the military) was intended to allow the individual states to defend themselves in the event a national military seized political control and turned against them.

It's a Republic, thank god, otherwise we'd have the babbling uneducated people who write for the new york times magazine and watch Keith Oberman controlling this ******* country.

Gary F, thank you for your comment but it in no way negates what I said. Also, no democracy wasn't only to resist Religious fascism, it also served to keep anyone who could control the info brought to the people from becoming extremely powerful.

You know that 's how the War between the State's started out...right??

The southern people wanted the right to have each state make their own "state rules",not just one BIG government, this did not go over.

war broke out. & now we are under a "big government " that makes all the rules. & is the final say so.

Lincoln later brought the issue of slavery in, but in fact the blacks that fought for 'state's rights' were very dedicated & true..They were excellent soldiers & their is a book dedicated to them. Very brave men, as they were in Nam..

i hear you.
