I use LUVS they are cheaper and good diapers. WHen the baby is little it doesnt really matter, but as my children have gotten older I swear by Pampers. (for when they move around more, better leak protection.)
I tried cloth diapers and they are dangerous, not only with the pins but if you even slightly put it on wrong its a DISASTER. And the services are expensive.

The truth of the matter is, different diapers are better for different babies. Most people I know (including me) preferred the Pampers Swaddlers for the first few weeks, but after that, it seems to depend more on the baby. I found that Huggies fit my daughter better than Pampers, but my sister had the opposite opinion with her son. Then my sister-in-law said that the generic store brand fit her daughter best of all. So, I would recommend trying different brands. Don't worry, you'll go through them so quickly that you'll have a chance to try however many as you want! :) Also, hopefully, if this is your first, people will just GIVE you diapers so you won't have to buy them at all, at least for a while.

I personally would suggest cloth diapering, either via a cloth diapering service or my washing them yourself.
The gel inside disposables diapers can cause a reaction against babies skin and the long term effects of this gel isn't know. Also, the bleech used to whiten them can cause a reaction as it is a chemical. The material isn't organic and cause a reaction (not to mention how long they take to decompose in a landfill, and that throwing raw sewage in the trash is illegal).
Cloth diapering is a wonderful long term investment (can be used on more than one child or even sold when they are no longer used). It saves thousand of dollars, cuts down on pollution (still uses water, but they do not need to be washed on their own, this is a myth), better for babies bum.
Hope you find this helpful, but more research for the 'right' brand and style would be needed this is just to give you an idea.

First I used the generic brand FITTI. They worked well on my son, didnt leak, and are half as much as the name brands. They also have smiley faces that go away when he is wet. However, because my son decided to become a streaker, I recently switched to cloth diapers...I love these even more. They arent nearly as icky as I first thought they would be, the fact that my washer has a sanitation cycle helps (although not necessary) and they are much more affordable and alot more cute and cuddly then a papery butt! So far I use Chinese prefolds (with cheapy gerber for extra obsorption) and a bummi whisper wrap cover, and snappis for when he needs extra spill protection (night time to avoid poopy overflows) but there are a million options out there! This is only what I have so far.
Good luck, I hope you find something that works well for you.

The top ones are pampers swaddlers/ cruisers or huggies natural care. They're so much softer and I've never had any leaks (unlike with reg. huggies and luvs). I did find something called white cloud at walmart (cheap) and they were actually pretty darned good (but only for daytime when you change them constantly). Also...I found some great nighttime diapers (Huggies overnights) that are fabulous...but I think they're only for bigger kids? I once tried fitties (someone else reccommended them above...they were the same quality as the white cloud...but they worked pretty darned well. Just try them all...some of them don't work for every baby. We got lucky and got a bunch of diff. kinds at our baby shower. Good luck!:) Oh...and I don't know if you've found a good diaper rash cream or not...but, I absolutely love something called boudreaux's(sp??) butt paste. It's awesome!

My husband and I used Pampers Swaddlers, then moved to the next steps for each level they have. We actually tried generic to save money and he broke out into a rash. The doctor said some generic diapers are tougher on the babies skin. We never tried cloth diapers so I dont have any advice there. Good luck!!

I used cloth during the day and night (white square fold yourself kind with the 'snappies', not pins, to do them up and little pants over the top) and then when they got to about 2mths old changed to Huggies for the nighttime as they absolutely surpass any other brand in preventing night time leakage. Once they were about 8mths old went to a cheaper day time disposable as the cloth didn't really absorb anything anymore. But the money I saved in the first 8mths was definately worth it and it really was not much extra washing at all, contrary to popular belief.
And after I changed to disposables during the day, my daughter started getting nappy rash for the first time so I do believe that cloth are better for little sensitive bottoms.

I wanted to use cloth diapers or a diaper service but then found out I was having twins and didn't have the time for cloth or the money for a service. I swore by Luvs diapers. They were very economical and held the moisture in without leaking. Definitely... LUVS!

My cousin swears by cloth diapers. They are supposedly better for the baby's skin and they have a service come in and pick up the soiled ones and replace them with fresh ones.
